NEPHAK Strategic Objectives
1 To provide accountable and committed strategic leadership to enhance PLHIV
voices and visibility at local, national and international levels
2 To mobilize PLHIV, their groups and networks to participate actively in the
national response to HIV and AIDS and related co-morbidities
3 To build the capacity of PLHIV and affected communities for informed
participation in national response to HIV and AIDS and related co-morbidities
4 To undertake advocacy and communication to influence policy and practice in
the area of HIV/AIDS, TB and other diseases
5 To foster partnership aimed at creating conducive environment for the
prevention, treatment, care and support of HIV/AIDS, TB and Malaria
6 To disseminate research information to people living with HIV and communities
affected by TB and Malaria

NEPHAK’s Achievements and Current Role
NEPHAK membership actively participates in formulating policy and strategy positions
on key issues of relevance to the national response and works closely with civil society
organizations (CSOs) and government of Kenya structures to ensure that issues relevant
to communities infected and affected by HIV/AIDS are addressed. NEPHAK membership
is expected to have informed representation at the different committees and
structures, as well as implementing mechanisms and the strategies to communicate
with the broader community and partners.

Some of the core activities achieved by NEPHAK include:
Local and National
• Representation of PLHIV and affected communities at all levels and structure of the
national response to HIV/AIDS and TB: Constituency; District; Province; the HIV/AIDS
Inter-Agency Coordinating Committees (HIV/AIDS - ICC) and TB Inter-Agency
Coordinating Committee (TB - ICC) and the Country Coordinating Mechanism (CCM)
of the Global Fund to fight HIV/AIDS, TB and Malaria
• Representation of PLHIV and affected communities at the National Task Force on
Development and Implementation of the Code of Conduct for stakeholders
implementing HIV/AIDS interventions in Kenya
• Implementation of ART Adherence Programme for PLHIV in partnership with African
Medical and Research Foundation (AMREF) and Elizabeth Glazier Paediatric
Foundation (EGPAF) in Eastern and Western Kenya provinces.
• NEPHAK input in the “summative review of KNASP II” and subsequent participation
in the development and validation of Kenya National AIDS Strategic plan 111
2009/10 – 2012/13 highlighting how PLHIV should be involved from HIV/AIDS policy
development to implementation levels.
• Participation in the design of Prevention with Positives (PwPs) implementation
framework at community, health and sectoral levels. NEPHAK is also part of the
Technical Working Group on PwPs being led by the National AIDS Control Council
• HIV Leadership through Accountability Programme, a research aimed at ensuring
accountability for promises made to achieve Universal Access to HIV treatment, care
and prevention in partnership with Global Network of People Living with HIV/AIDS
(GNP+)

1 Member of the Abuja 15% Campaign team in Kenya, East Africa and Africa
2 Member of the Africa – wide TB/HIV Advocacy Forum
3 Member of the Community Delegation to the Board of Global Fund to fight HIV/AIDS,
TB and Malaria (GFATM)
4 Alternate Board member, UNITAID (International Drug Purchase facility),
representing people living with HIV and affected by the 3 diseases: HIV/AIDS; TB and
Malaria (GFATM)
5 Member, Working Groups on Advocacy, Communication and Social Mobilization
(ACSM), Global Laboratories Initiative (GLI) and TB/HIV at the Stop TB Partnership.
